Our History

In the Beginning

The House Of God, The Saints Of Christ, Inc, began approximately in 1927 on Florida Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida as Elder Nick Hightower, Sr., began preaching the true Word of God. God poured out His Spirit and added members such as Mother Claudia, Mother Washington, and others to the church.

Later, a church was started in both Folkston and Mattox, Georgia, where Mother Mary Moody and others were among the first saved. During this time, this body was being ruled and governed by another organization. Because these members would not accept an older pastor in preference to their young pastor, they left that organization with their young pastor, Elder Nick Hightower, Sr., and this was the beginning of the House Of God, The Saints Of Christ Organization. After a number of visions from God, our founder, the late Bishop Nick Hightower, Sr., related to the vision in which the organization’s name was given by God. The vision showed him “The House of God”, Genesis 28:15: “Saints of Christ.” Corinthians 1:2. Bishop Hightower read these scriptures and found that they were in accordance with the vision. Later, the name of the church was changed from The House Of God, The Saints Of Christ to ‘The House Of God Saints in Christ, Incorporated.

God then saved Superintendent WM. Thomas in South Jacksonville to aid the Bishop. Then came Father and Mother Lester, and others to be among the early supporters of the organization.

The movement then spread from Jacksonville, Folkston, and Mattox to the entire state of Florida, and South Georgia. Also, there were churches being preached out in Buffalo, New York, Newark, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some of the earlier leaders of the organization were saints such as Elders B. Roy, I. A. B. Crews, Alonzo Davis, Thomas Jefferson, Elder Dickson, and Mother Anna Milliner, Under the leadership of Saints like these and others, the organization progressed.

Approximately fifteen years prior to his death, Bishop Hightower had a vision while Elder J. L, Litman was preaching an Anniversary Sermon for him; in the vision it was shown to him that Elder J.L. Litman would be the next Presiding General Bishop of the House Of God Saints In Christ, Inc.

On July 11, 1971, God called our Founder, Bishop Nick Hightower, Sr, home to eternal rest. The organization then elected Elder J. L. Litman to serve as Presiding General Bishop of the House Of God Saints In Christ, Inc. Under his leadership the church continued to progress. On April 25, 1994 the Lord called him home to eternal rest. In that same year during our October General Assembly, the general body elected our present Presiding Prelate, Bishop Lorenzo Moore to serve as our third Executive Officer.

Under this present administration, the church continues to move progressively forward with the ability to communicate and connect with modern technology, for the 21st century and beyond.

The vision of our present administration and leadership is to promote and implement strategies to strengthen, build, and grow our church. We will continue to strive to have a House of God Saints In Christ Church, Inc., in every state, and internationally.
